Seahawks bring Jennings back

RENTON — The Seahawks are bringing Kelly Jennings back for another year having agreed to a one-year contract with the cornerback.

Jennings, who started 14 games for the Seahawks last season, has spent his entire five-year career with the Seahawks, who picked him in the first round of the 200

6 draft. At 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, Jennings doesn’t fit the mold of the physical cornerback that coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider prefer to play press coverage. But the Seahawks are extremely young in the secondary aside from Marcus Trufant, so there is value in bringing back an experienced player who knows the defense.

Like other free agent signings, Jennings won’t be able to practice until the league’s new collective bargaining agreement is ratified on Thursday, and when he does return, there are no guarantees he’ll get back his starting job. Second-year player Walter Thurmond is a strong contender to land the spot opposite Trufant, and rookie Richard Sherman could also factor in.

Seahawks target Pro Bowl TE

Free agent Zach Miller, who made the Pro Bowl last season as an Oakland Raider, visited the Seahawks Monday. Over the past two seasons, Miller caught 126 passes for 1,490 yards and eight touchdowns, and in his four seasons has never caught fewer than 44 passes. If Miller signs, it would bring into question the future of John Carlson, as both are used more as pass catchers than blocking tight ends.

The Seahawks are presumably hoping that offense line coach Tom Cable, who was previously the head coach in Oakland, can help in recruiting Miller.

One to watch

With Walter Thurmond sitting out with an ankle injury and Jennings not yet in camp, Brandon Browner is working with the first-team defense at cornerback along with Marcus Trufant. Browner, who signed with Seattle after the 2010 season, has spent the past five years in the CFL. He signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2005, but ended up on injured reserve and was cut a year later. At 6-foot-4, 221 pounds, Browner has a combination of size and speed that makes him an interesting prospect.
