RENTON — Brian Banks, the former high school football star who was recently exonerated of a rape conviction, will get a tryout with the Seahawks next week, the team confirmed Wednesday. Banks, 26, was arrested and convicted of rape and kidnapping 10 years ago and spent five years in prison. After being released he spent the next five years on parole, having to register as a sex offender and wear an ankle monitor.
Banks conviction was thrown out last week after his accuser recanted her story, and now, 10 years removed from a promising high school career, he is attempting an unlikely comeback. Banks, a linebacker who was recruited by USC while Pete Carroll was the coach there, has been contacted by six NFL teams, according to a press release put out by California Western School of Law, whose California Innocence Project helped clear Banks’ name. Banks’ first scheduled tryout will be with the Seahawks on June 7.
“This is what I have dreamed about my entire life,” Banks said in the statement. “I am ready to show the NFL what I am capable of doing. I want as many opportunities with as many NFL teams who are willing to give me a shot.”
