A little late to this, sorry folks. I made the silly mistake of thinking I could run some errands today and, you know, not be in front of my computer all day.
But as most of you have heard by now, the Seahawks fired offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates Tuesday after one year leading the offense. Bates, who spent one year with Pete Carroll at USC before joining him in Seattle, was in charge of an offense that finished the season 28th in total offense and 31st in rushing offense.
Not long after news of Bates’ firing, which was first reported by the NFL Network, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that former Denver head coach Josh McDaniels, who was previously the offensive coordinator in New England, has been in talks with the Seahawks about the job since Monday. Another possible candidate could be Minnesota offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who reportedly has interviewed for the vacant quarterbacks coaching position.
Bates’ play calling was often called into question this season, particularly decisions to throw down field in short-yardage situations on third and fourth down, but that same aggressive play calling helped the Seahawks score 41 points in a playoff win over New Orleans. On Sunday, however, the Seahawks punted on their first eight possessions in a loss to Chicago.
With Bates out, the Seahawks will start the 2011 season with their fourth offensive coordinator in as many seasons.
