RENTON — Not the news the struggling Seattle Seahawks needed.
Already facing an 0-2 hole and an coming off being shut out for the first time in four years, Seattle coach Pete Carroll announced Monday that veteran guard Robert Gallery will need surgery to repair a groin injury suffered in Sunday’s 24-0 loss at Pittsburgh.
Carroll said Gallery suffered the injury early in the first quarter Sunday and played through it, but that surgery is needed. He’ll miss the next four to six weeks at least. Carroll said the plan is for Paul McQuistan to get the first shot at replacing Gallery.
Gallery and wide receiver Sidney Rice were two of Seattle’s biggest splashes in free agency, but Rice hasn’t played yet with a labrum injury in his shoulder.
