KIRKLAND – When it comes to the Seattle Seahawks’ outside linebackers this training camp, no news has been good news.
The latest blow came Tuesday, when linebacker D.D. Lewis was placed on injured reserve due to complications from shoulder surgery. Lewis, whose first procedure was done by doctors outside the organization, is scheduled to undergo another surgery with Seahawks team doctors Thursday. He will miss the entire season.
“That’s too bad, but he’s a good young guy,” coach Mike Holmgren said. “We’ll fix it, and we’ll have him next year.”
Lewis, 25, had supposedly corrected any problems with his left shoulder through offseason surgery. The Seahawks were so confident that he was healthy that they signed him to a long-term contract in July.
But Lewis’ shoulder began to hurt early in training camp, forcing him to miss all three preseason games. Team trainers opted to put him back on the field this week to get a better feel for his condition, but the shoulder flared up so much on Sunday that Lewis had to take the following day off.
On Tuesday, when the Seahawks had to make two moves to get down to 76 players, Lewis went on the IR.
The injury is especially devastating when considering the fact that Lewis was the team’s best option to fill in for starting strongside linebacker Chad Brown.
Brown is expected to be out at least six more weeks after breaking the fibula in his left leg.
With Brown and Lewis sidelined, the starting job will come down to Isaiah Kacyvenski and Tracy White.
