Seahawks learn to trust, Carroll on officiating, other Monday links

My column in today’s Herald looks at what happened last week that might have helped the Seahawks dominate in Sunday’s win, and perhaps turn a corner with six games left in the season. Earl Thomas said part of what brought that change about, believe it or not, was him getting into it with some teammates during a walkthrough because they were eating sunflower seeds.

“Trust,” Thomas said. “That’s what we’ve been missing, to be totally honest. I think we haven’t been trusting each other, but tonight, man, it was just pureness.”

“We’re playing for each other, that’s what make us us, that’s what makes us special.”

Pete Carroll’s Monday press conference is still a few hours away, but he did his usual radio show on 710 ESPN Seattle, and had a few interesting things to say.

Most notably, when asked about how demonstrative he was with the officials after a couple of calls, Carroll acknowledged that he’s getting frustrated with the way games are being called. Carroll’s complaint is less that his team is being flagged for a lot of penalties, but rather that a lot of things go uncalled on the opponent, leading to the Seahawks having 40 more penalties this year than their opponents, the most in the league. Denver is second in that dubious feat, with 33 more penalties than their opponents.

“I’ve had it about up to here with this penalty situation and the way it’s gone,” Carroll said. “… They won’t call penalties on the other guys.”

You can listen to all of Carroll’s radio show here:

And a few more links:

While it’s fair to say this year’s defense isn’t as good as last year’s, the 2014 group is slowly getting back to being one of the league’s best. The Seahawks now rank first in the NFL in yards allowed and sixth in points allowed after holding the Cardinals to a single field goal and a season-worst 204 yards.

Pete King’s Monday Morning Quarterback column is, as always, a good roundup of the week that was, and has a few notes on the Seahawks, including his pick for offensive player of the week.

Danny O’Neil of 710 ESPN Seattle has three things we learned and three things we’re trying to figure out.

USA Today’s Jim Corbett spent the week in town covering the Seahawks. Here’s his take on the Seahawks winning a make-or-break game.
