Seahawks Notebook: Seattle prepares Whitehurst to start

RENTON — Pete Carroll didn’t know on Wednesday who will be his starting quarterback when the Seahawks travel to Cleveland this weekend, but for now he’s preparing as if it’s Charlie Whitehurst.

“He’s going to take all the reps,” Carroll said. “We’re going to get Charlie ready and give a lit

tle bit to Josh (Portis), then they’ll be some opportunities to do some stuff, maybe, with (Tarvaris Jackson) as we see how he does. … I’m anxious to see how he does with this preparation behind him. I think he’s going to handle it very well.”

Jackson, who suffered a strained pectoral muscle in Seattle’s win over New York, has not been ruled out, but he’s also not ready to go through the rigors of a full practice. Carroll said Jackson would “Do some stuff today in practice” and on the official injury report, the quarterback was listed as having been a limited participant in practice.

“He hasn’t practiced yet, so we don’t know, but today we start to find out,” Carroll said. “He’s doing better, he’s encouraged, he’s done a lot of stuff. … He has to mentally prepare, so if he gets the opportunity, he can jump at it later in the week.”

Carroll said he is in no hurry to decide on a starter, and that he could wait all the way until Sunday to make a final decision. For now, however, Whitehurst is being prepared for his third career start.

“We may go all the way to game time to understand whether he’ll be available to us,” Carroll said. “… I’m not impatient about it. In the meantime Charlie is getting ready to play.”

Carroll also noted that Jackson, whether he makes it back this week or not, is making quick progress coming back from the injury: “The trainers and the doctors are really surprised that he’s able to do what he’s doing. He’s really tough-minded.”

Other injuries

Center Max Unger (foot) and tight end Zach Miller (neck/head) were both held out of practice Wednesday. Guard Robert Gallery (groin), running back Marshawn Lynch (ankle), LB Malcolm Smith (hamstring) and receiver Mike Williams (concussion) all practiced fully.

Seattle’s three players on the physically unable to perform list — cornerback Roy Lewis, receiver Deon Butler and tight end Cameron Morrah — all practiced for the first time this season. Players who start the year on the PUP list must sit out the first six weeks of the season. Once they return to action, teams have three weeks to make room for them on the active roster, place them on injured reserve, or release them.

Seattle adds LB Farwell

The Seahawks made a roster move Friday, signing linebacker and special teams standout Heath Farwell and releasing running back Allen Bradford. Farwell, who has spent his entire career in Minnesota since signing with the Vikings as an undrafted rookie in 2005, was named to the Pro Bowl as a special teamer following the 2009 season. Bradford, who played for Carroll at USC, was claimed off of waivers by Seattle just last week.
