Seahawks notes: No changes planned on offensive line

RENTON — When it comes to the state of the offensive line, the Seattle Seahawks aren’t planning on any snap decisions.

Seattle’s offense was stuck in neutral in its 9-3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. It was a continuation from the season opener, when the Seahawks also struggled on offense in a 12-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins, and some have pointed the finger at the play of the offensive line as the reason for those struggles.

However, when Seahawks coach Pete Carroll met the press Monday at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, he said no changes were in store for the offensive line.

“No, we are not considering any changes,” Carroll replied.

Seattle has used the same offensive line in both of its games: Justin Britt at center, Mark Glowinski and J’Marcus Webb at guard, Bradley Sowell and Garry Gilliam at tackle. Rookie first-round draft pick Germain Ifedi was originally slated to start at guard, but he suffered a sprained ankle just before the season began and has yet to suit up in a game. Webb took Ifedi’s place in the starting lineup.

Carroll said it’s possible Ifedi will be able to return for next Sunday’s game at home against the San Francisco 49ers. If there’s a lineup change to be made on the offensive line, it would be moving Ifedi back into his spot at right guard.

“Germain is really close to getting back,” said Carroll, who added that Ifedi was scheduled to do some flat-ground running Monday. “He looks to be a tremendous factor for us. We were really excited about him, so when he comes back out I wouldn’t be surprised if you see a little bit of a difference because he was that impacting all throughout camp and the preseason.”

Baldwin, Lockett remain up in air

Seattle receivers Doug Baldwin and Tyler Lockett both suffered knee injuries Sunday, though both were able to finish the game. Carroll had little new information about their injuries, beyond saying the team would know more later this week.

“I don’t have any really good information for you,” Carroll said. “(Baldwin) seems to feel OK, and there will be three or four guys that we’ve got to check out as the days come off this week. We’ll see what happens Wednesday or Thursday.”

Among those who are still up in the air are Ifedi, Lockett, tight end Nick Vannett and running back C.J. Prosise. Vannett missed the first two games because of a sprained ankle. Prosise practiced all last week, but was held out of the game because of a cracked bone in his wrist.

Seahawks request answers on penalties

Seattle was penalized 10 times for 114 yards against the Rams, and Carroll was livid about some of those calls, including the Seahawks being flagged three times for offensive pass interference. Carroll said Monday the team has filed questions with the league, as it routinely does after games, and that he expects to hear back Wednesday or Thursday.

“The last thing I’m going to do is make a big deal about that,” Carroll said. “The fact that we had three offensive pass interference penalties, I don’t think we’ve had that many in a year, so that is an unusual game in that regard. So those are all the ones we will question and get the explanations for and understand that.”

Starting pitching, a renovated offense and regression in the AL West are in Seattle’s favor, but injury issues, bullpen concerns and the Houston Astros could be a problem.
