SEATTLE — The hits just keep on coming.
As the Seattle Seahawks went into Sunday’s game without their top four receivers, they soon got news that they had lost two more.
Backup quarterback Seneca Wallace, who practiced at wide receiver all week, strained his calf just before Sunday’s game against San Francisco and was unavailable to play. A few minutes later, after making the Seahawks’ first reception of the game, starting receiver Logan Payne suffered a knee injury that ended his afternoon.
Payne’s injury left the Seahawks with just three healthy receivers: Courtney Taylor, former practice squader Michael Bumpus and Billy McMullen, who has only been with the team for five days.
After Sunday’s 33-30 loss to San Francisco, coach Mike Holmgren said that Payne’s injury was a significant one. Holmgren added that Payne tore a ligament, although he did not specify which ligament.
“We’ll try to look to sign a couple more guys,” Holmgren said when asked what the Seahawks will do now.
Projected starters Deion Branch and Bobby Engram are close to returning to action. Branch has an outside chance of playing in next Sunday’s game against St. Louis, while Engram is likely to return after the Sept. 28 bye.
