The Seahawks lost defensive tackle Brandon Mebane to a hamstring injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s victory over the Giants, and tight end Luke Willson to a sprained ankle not long after. Pete Carroll said he did not yet know the severity of either injury, though considering that Mebane was immediately ruled out after the injury, there’s a decent chance that is at least somewhat serious if a decision was made on his status that quickly.
“He pulled a hamstring today,” Carroll said. “Don’t know how serious yet, but that’s a big man to pull a hammy. Can you imagine how big his hamstring is?”
Carroll didn’t give any update on Willson other than to say he sprained an ankle.
Beyond that, Carroll said there were a few guys banged up, but “no serious ones right now.”
The good news for the Seahawks Sunday was that they had six players on the field who were unavailable a week ago: center Max Unger, left tackle Russell Okung, cornerback Byron Maxwell, cornerback Jeremy Lane, defensive tackle Jordan Hill and safety Jeron Johnson, who made his first career start in place of an injured Kam Chancellor.
After the game, Carroll expressed optimism that Chancellor, who has missed two games with a groin injury, will be back for next week’s game in Kansas City.
With Maxwell and Lane both back, the Seahawks went from being thin at cornerback to having enough depth to rotate players in and out, though obviously Richard Sherman was not subbed out. In his first game since the season opener, Lane played most of the snaps in Seattle’s nickel package. Marcus Burley, who took over the nickel role following Lane’s injury, played there some, but was limited by a hamstring injury. Tharold Simon started at right cornerback, but Byron Maxwell, who was the starter before a calf injury that kept him out of three games, also played extensively.
“It seemed like just a total bonus that we have those guys now,” Carroll said of a defense that at one point was playing safety Steven Terrell in the nickel and also briefly turned to Josh Thomas, who has since been released. “We’ve gone without them for so long, it seems. It’s great to have them back.”
