Seahawks preparing for 49ers on a short week

The Seahawks have no time to enjoy their big win over New England, because they’ve got a game on Thursday night San Francisco, a game that, at least until Arizona plays, will give one team sole possession of first place in the NFC West.

“We’re already on to San Francisco,” Carroll said. “This is a challenging day for us to make sure that we get everything right and get organized for the week.”

“We have a big competition this week. Who’s going to prepare the best? Today’s huge, tomorrow, every one of these days. It’s a unique opportunity and we’re going to try to make the very most of it and have a heck of a day down there.”

Asked about the challenges, both mental and physical, about preparing for a Thursday game, Carroll answered: “You don’t have a whole lot of choice physically. You’ve just got to get there, so it is the learning, acquiring the game plan, the style of play that you’re up against and all of that stuff in a condensed fashion, you don’t have as much time. It’s really important, we’ve talked as coaches that we have to teach really well, we have to present information really clearly. We have to maximize every second that we have, and meanwhile take care of the guys as they return and get their bodies back. It’s a big physical challenge, there’s no question about that, but it’s equal, and there’s a benefit at the other end too by the break that you get. So we’re going to try to take full advantage of it, go for it and hopefully get out of there with a win and take advantage of the days off that we’ll get.”

Carroll said the team continues to be in pretty good shape on the injury front. Guard John Moffitt has once again been ruled out with a knee injury, but otherwise Carroll said everyone has a chance to play Thursday, including safety Kam Chancellor, who hurt his elbow Sunday according to Carroll, and is also on this week’s injury report with an ankle injury.

“I think he’s fine,” Carroll said of Chancellor. “There are a number of guys who won’t do a lot today. We’re not doing a whole lot anyway, but we’re just going to make sure that they’re feeling good. This is really a day off. John Moffitt’s looks like he’s not going to make it for this game, but everybody else looks like they have a chance, so we should be in pretty good shape.”

Carroll said Walter Thurmond, who is eligible to come off the physically unable to perform list this week, will do some work in practice, but is not a consideration for this week’s game given the nature of a Thursday game.

“It’s not the right week to bring him back because we’re not even practicing the way we normally practice,” Carroll said.

The Seahawks did put out an injury report today, though it is more of a hypothetical injury report. The team will do a light walkthrough-type practice, but when a team plays on Thursday, it has to put out a report that is an estimation of practice participation if the team were to have a full practice.
