The Seahawks signed cornerback Cary Williams to a big-money contract in the offseason to fill the void in the Legion of Boom secondary.
Williams’ stay lasted less than a season.
The Seahawks cut ties with Williams on Monday, releasing the eight-year pro just 12 games into his stay in Seattle.
Williams signed a three-year, $18 million contract in the offseason to replace Byron Maxwell, who departed as a free agent. Williams had been a starter the previous four seasons, two with Baltimore and two with Philadelphia, recording eight interceptions in those four seasons.
Williams started the first 10 games of the season for the Seahawks with mixed results. He was benched midway through Seattle’s 29-13 victory over San Francisco three weeks ago, then was left inactive for the Seahawks’ past two victories. DeShawn Shead, who took Williams’ place in the starting lineup at right cornerback, played well in the past two games.
With Williams released, Seattle is left with Shead, Richard Sherman, Jeremy Lane, Marcus Burley and Tye Smith at corner.
Williams’ $3.5 million base salary was guaranteed, so Seattle doesn’t receive any salary cap relief this season. Next season the Seahawks will absorb approximately $2.33 million in dead money against the cap, but save about $3.83 million.
