Robert Gallery, long believed to be a target of the Seahawks, has reached an agreement with Seattle. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news, and his agent has since confirmed that Gallery the Seahawks have agreed in principle to a three-year deal.
Gallery, who will fill Seattle’s vacancy at left guard, has spent his entire seven-year career in Oakland, where current Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Cable was previously the head coach. Gallery said after last season that he didn’t plan on returning to Oakland, and given Seattle’s need at the position and his connections with Cable, the immediate assumption was that he could end up here.
Gallery, 31, was the No. 2 overall pick as a left tackle out of Iowa, but didn’t pan out at that position. He was, however, able to reinvent himself as a guard, and was one of the top linemen available in free agency. Gallery will bring a much-needed veteran presence to what could be a very young offensive line. After the draft, Cable projected a starting line that included second-year LT Russell Okung, third-year C Max Unger (who missed almost all of last season), and rookies John Moffitt and James Carpenter on the right side of the line.
