The Seahawks have spent the first week of free agency focusing on retaining their own players, re-signing the likes of Red Bryant, Michael Robinson and Paul McQuistan, but on Saturday Seattle made its first splash in free agency, adding former Tennessee defensive linemen Jason Jones. The deal is for one year, according to his agent, Mike McCartney.
Jones, 25, a second-round pick in 2008, was one of the top defensive players left on the free agent market. He visited Seattle this week, as well as St. Louis, and many considered the Rams, coached by former Titans coach Jeff Fisher, were the front-runners to land him. He has played both defensive tackle and end, though his natural position is the three-technique tackle spot that Alan Branch played last year. How exactly the playing time works out and what Jones’ role will be remains to be seen, but the Seahawks rotate linemen enough that there should be plenty of snaps to go around. Jones, who is listed as 6-foot-5, 276 pounds, should help improve the interior pass rush for a defense that, while very good last year, struggled to consistently pressure the quarterback.
In his four seasons with the Titans, Jones started 31 games, totaling 112 tackles, 15.5 sacks and 7 forced fumbles.
