The Seahawks have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin. Rubin, who is listed at 6-foot-2, 325 pounds, has spent his entire seven-year career in Cleveland and was a starter for each of the past five seasons.
Rubin’s signing could very well just be to add more depth to a line that dealt with a lot of injuries last season, but if the Seahawks view the 28-year-old former sixth-round pick as a starter, the signing could give them the flexibility to make a cap-saving move with one of their starting defensive tackles. If the Seahawks were to release Brandon Mebane—a very tough decision considering how well he was playing last year before a season-ending injury—they would save $5.5 million in cap space in 2015. Releasing Tony McDaniel, meanwhile, would create $3 million in cap space.
