After an initial week that saw the Seattle Seahawks re-sign three veterans and add another, the team hasn’t exactly come up for air.
The Seahawks opened the second week of free agency by hosting safety Brock Marion (Miami), offensive tackle Ephraim Salaam (Denver) and linebacker Warrick Holdman (Chicago). Seattle is also reportedly interested in cornerback Troy Vincent (Philadelphia) and middle linebacker Michael Barrow (New York Giants).
Barrow gives the team an interesting option after starter Randall Godfrey was signed by the San Diego Chargers earlier this week. The former New York Giants starters was released Tuesday to clear up $3 million of salary cap space.
Another possibility is cornerback Bobby Taylor, who visited Seattle on Monday and Tuesday but did not sign with the team. He is visiting other cities but has not ruled out signing with Seattle.
The Seahawks still have some room under the cap, but gave big contracts to Wistrom (six years, $33 million) and wide receiver Darrell Jackson (six years, $25 million). Those two players received signing bonuses that combined for $22 million, although the cap hits will be spread out over the duration of the contracts.
The Seahawks opened free agency with about $14 million available under the 2004 salary cap. Some of that money will go toward the rookie class, while a good portion of it already went toward signing Wistrom, Jackson, defensive tackle Cedric Woodard and linebacker Isaiah Kacyvenski.
The Seahawks are also looking at the possibility of re-signing punter Tom Rouen, while safety Reggie Tongue could also be an option.
The visit from Marion means the Seahawks are exploring other options at strong safety, where Tongue started last season. Second-year player Ken Hamlin could play strong safety, with veteran Damien Robinson sliding into the starting role at free safety.
