Seahawks training camp Day 4: still no Okung

With No. 2 Ndamukong Suh agreeing to terms today, Seahawks rookie LT Russell Okung is now just one of two first-round picks not to sign along with No. 9 pick RB C.J. Spiller.

Pete Carroll has made it clear that Okung is hurting himself by missing practice, while Matt Hasselbeck says he’d like to see Okung get into camp soon, but that the players in camp have enough on their plates that they aren’t worried too much about who isn’t there.

Aaron Curry, who suffered a concussion on Saturday, continues to be out. Carroll said yesterday (he didn’t talk to reporters today) that Curry will likely be back Thursday after a day off Wednesday. And yes, you read that correctly, after just four days of training camp, Carroll is already giving his players a day off.

Hasselbeck said the day off is welcome for the players, but also means they need to make the most of the days leading up to the off day, something he thinks they have done, “So far we’ve just been crisper,” he said.

LB Lofa Tatupu was at practice, but given the day off.

Continuing to look good in his first camp is rookie WR Golden Tate, who seems to come up with at least one big play per day. Today it was a long catch in the back of the end zone from Hasselbeck during a two-minute drill.

“Golden Tate just makes plays,” Hasselbeck said. “… He’s electric once he gets the ball in his hands.”

Second-year receiver Deon Butler has also had a good couple of days, something he’ll need to do to earn himself playing time this year.

Backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, who has struggled at times during training camp, had perhaps his best day throwing the ball. He still held the ball a bit too long at times, leading to a few plays being blown dead for “sacks,” but it was certainly a better performance overall than what we’ve seen the past couple of days.

Today’s practice nearly featured the first fight of training camp, but much to the chagrin of the fans in attendance, cooler heads prevailed. The near dust-up happened when, after running a reverse, Tate was popped by DT Kevin Vickerson at the end of the play. Tate quickly jumped to his feet and got in Vickerson’s face, as did G Max Unger. Things didn’t escalate beyond that, however.

The Seahawks also attempted a couple of trick plays, though neither worked. Justin Forsett overthrew John Carlson on a halfback pass, and later Mike Williams caught a backward pass, then tried to throw across the field, but the pass came up well short of a target.
