The Seahawks cleared up two spots on their 53-man roster Tuesday, releasing wide receiver B.J. Daniels and running back Rod Smith.
Daniels, originally claimed off waivers in 2013, is a former college quarterback who was converted to receiver. After spending last season on Seattle’s practice squad, he was active for each of Seattle’s past two games, catching one pass for 12 yards. He’s also served as the scout team quarterback in practices.
Smith, an undrafted rookie out of Ohio State, had been on Seattle’s practice squad before being signed to the 53-man roster just prior to Sunday’s game at Cincinnati, providing depth behind the injured Marshawn Lynch and the hobbled Fred Jackson. Smith carried the ball twice for five yards against the Bengals.
Both players are eligible to be claimed off waivers by any other NFL team until 1 p.m. tomorrow. Should they go unclaimed there’s a good chance the Seahawks would re-sign both to their practice squad.
Seattle now has two open roster spots to play with. One of those reportedly has been filled:
The #Seahawks are going to sign CB Crezdon Butler tomorrow, a source said. Adds depth to a thin Seattle secondary.

Butler was originally a fifth-round pick in the 2010 draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since then Butler has kicked around, being a part of seven different organizations, most recently the Detroit Lions. Butler would help address Seattle’s injury issues at cornerback, with Tharold Simon (toe) being placed on injured reserve while Marcus Burley (thumb) and Tye Smith (hip) also missed Sunday’s game.
How the Seahawks use the other open roster spot is unknown. However, receiver Paul Richardson (knee) is eligible to come off the physically-unable-to-perform list following Sunday’s home game against Carolina, and Seattle coach Pete Carroll has said Richardson is already fully recovered. Cornerback Jeremy Lane (knee, arm) is also eligible to return after Sunday, but Carroll has said Lane is unlikely to able to return by then.
