RENTON — The Seahawks were a team desperate for good news after Sunday’s 27-3 loss to Arizona, and Monday morning might have brought them just that.
After getting back test results, the Seahawks learned linebacker Lofa Tatupu’s injury may not be season ending, head coach Jim Mora said in his Monday press conference.
Following Sunday’s game, Mora said the Pro Bowl middle linebacker would require surgery and would be out for the season.
Tatupu does have a torn pectoral muscle, but it appears the muscle is not torn all the way off the bone, and therefore may not require surgery. More tests need to be done — Mora said they’ll look at an MRI of his healthy right pectoral muscle to compare the two — and there’s no guarantee the news will be good, but there is at least the possibility Tatupu could return this season.
Mora said it is not known how long Tatupu will be out if he does not need surgery.
The Seahawks will practice Tuesday and Wednesday before taking the rest of the week off. They have a bye on Sunday. Linebacker Leroy Hill and cornerback Marcus Trufant are both expected to return to practice this week on a limited basis.
“We’ll work them in there slowly,” Mora said.
Mora reported that Matt Hasselbeck, who was sacked five times, is sore, but said, “I don’t think he’s any worse for the wear.”
Defensive end Patrick Kerney and cornerback Kelly Jennings, who were both injured Sunday, should be back for the Seahawks next game Nov. 1 at Dallas.
Guard Rob Sims, who has an ankle injury, will return to practice this week. Tackles Sean Locklear (ankle) and Walter Jones (knee) will continue to be out this week, and the long-term prognosis on both is still unknown. Jones might return to practice next week after the bye, which would be the first step toward determining his future.
