Tuesday in camp

The Mariners went 2-for-2 in Tucson, rallying with four runs in the eighth inning to beat the Chicago White Sox 6-4.

Jose Lopez, Ricky Gutierrez, Ryan Christianson, Ramon Santiago and Randy Winn got hits off Chicago relief pitcher Kevin Walker. Santiago’s single drove in the tying and go-ahead runs.

After starter Bobby Madritsch struggled through five innings by allowing four runs, the bullpen gave the Mariners a chance to come back. Jeff Nelson and Nate Bland each pitched a scoreless inning, and Shigetoshi Hasegawa worked around two hits and a walk in the final two innings to finish the game

Today in camp

The games: Mariners vs. Royals, 12:05 p.m. at Peoria; Mariners vs. Angels, 6:05 p.m. at Peoria.

Radio: KOMO (1000 AM) for the night game only

TV: FSN (night game only)

Of note: Right-hander Ryan Franklin will start for the Mariners against the Royals, followed by right-hander Julio Mateo and left-hander Matt Thornton. It’s an especially important outing for Thornton, who is trying to overcome a difficult spring and make the team as a left-handed relief specialist. Right-hander Runelvys Hernandez will start for the Royals.

M’s right-hander Jorge Campillo will start against the Angels, trying to maintain his slim chances of winning a roster spot. Right-hander Felix Hernandez and left-hander George Sherrill also will pitch. Right-hander John Lackey will start for the Angels.

On the trainer’s table

The Mariners’ two biggest concerns, pitchers Joel Pineiro and Eddie Guardado, are making steady improvement.

Pineiro (sore right shoulder) felt good Tuesday, one day after he threw two innings of a minor league game in Peoria, and he will pitch Saturday in an exhibition game.

Guardado (strained right hamstring) threw 30 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday morning with no problems and is scheduled for another simulated game Thursday.

Weather

Isolated thunderstorms today with a high of 69.

They said it

“Did he nix any chance he has of making the club? No. But it didn’t help him, either.”

Manager Mike Hargrove on pitcher Scott Atchison, who struggled in the ninth inning Monday night against the Rockies. Atchison is one of the relief pitchers considered on the bubble for a roster spot.

They did it

Ricky Gutierrez seems like a long shot to make the opening-day roster, but he turned in a play Tuesday worth keeping on the highlight reel. The White Sox’s A.J. Pierzynski hit a soft popup behind third base and Gutierrez, starting at third, made a long run into left field and a diving catch to end the third inning.
