Second-half comeback carries Lake Stevens to win over Cascade

LAKE STEVENS — Cascade and Lake Stevens waged a battle of two halves Friday night at Lake Stevens High School.

Cascade’s Lorne Bridgford returned the game’s opening kick off for a touchdown and that’s how the game stayed until halftime. Lake Stevens rallied in the second hald for a 28-19 Wesco North win. “Cascade did a good job of stopping our run game,” Tri said. “We had to make some adjustments at halftime.”

But Bruins’ quarterback Aaron Frye rushed for a 1-yard touchdown early in the second half to stake Cascade to a 13-0 lead.

It was then that the Vikings went to work.

Dustin Adams caught a pass from tailback Isaac Molstre for an 80-yard touchdown run to get Lake Stevens on the board.

The Bruins tried to punt on their ensuing possession, but the punter fumbled the ball and Lake Stevens’ Daniel Russum recovered the fumble 33 yards for the score and a 14-13 Lake Stevens lead.

“That was a huge momentum swing for us,” Tri said.

Lake Stevens increased the lead to 21-13 when Clark Ferrucci scored on a 1-yard run.

But Cascade wasn’t going away quietly. Frye connected with Julian Willis for a 50-yard touchdown to set up a two-point conversion attempt to tie.

But Lake Stevens stopped Cascade on the half-yard line to preserve the lead.

“That (play) was the ball game,” Tri said.

Lake Stevens added some insurance when Molstre scored on a 6-yard run to make it 28-19, which is how the contest ended.

“Congratulations to them,” Cascade head coach Jake Huizinga said. “They had a nice comeback to win.”
