Second-half defense carries M-P past Oak Harbor

MARYSVILLE – It took the Marysville-Pilchuck boys basketball team a half to figure out Oak Harbor’s Jeremy Brown. But once the Tomahawks shut Brown down, it was off to the races for Marysville.

Jason Krischano scored 28 points and the Tomahawks stopped Brown in the second half to win 83-61 Saturday night in a Western Conference 4A North Division game.

Marysville held a slender 36-33 lead at halftime, with Brown scoring 22 in the first half. But the Tomahawks switched up defenses, holding Brown to two points in the third quarter as Marysville took a 58-41 lead.

“We came out in a combination defense on Brown,” Marysville coach Mike Lowery explained. “He had 22 in the first half and he ended up with just two free throws in the third quarter.”

In the fourth quarter, Oak Harbor turned up the pressure and closed within six with four minutes to play. But Marysville settled down and was able to pull away at the end.

“I was really pleased,” Lowery said. “Obviously at the start of the second half we did a really nice job. Then when things started going south in a hurry, we did a good job of settling ourselves down and executing against their pressure.”

Daimino Stewart and Marcus Enick each added 16 points for Marysville and Keaton Taitingfong added 11 points and nine assists.

Brown finished with 28 points for Oak Harbor.
