Second-half touchdowns help Everett win

EVERETT -Everett made two second-half touchdowns stand up to defeat Mountlake Terrace 28-14 Thursday in a Western Conference South Division high school football game at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Everett improved its record to 3-3 in league and overall. Mountlake Terrace is 0-6, 0-6.

Behind 7-0 after the first quarter and having punted twice and turned the ball over on downs twice on their first four drives, the Everett offense was anything but prolific early on.

But with Mountlake Terrace putting nine men consistently on the line of scrimmage to stop the run, the Seagulls pulled something out of their sleeve to loosen up the Hawks’ defense.

Everett quarterback John Cronin handed the ball off to halfback Brandon Osborn, who faked an inside run then stepped back and lofted a beautiful pass to wideout Jamie Lee, who galloped into the end zone.

“With (Mountlake Terrace) putting nine men up front we had to do some play-action passing and other things to make stuff happen,” said Everett coach Paul Lawrence.

Everett’s next score in the second quarter was fueled by the play of Cronin on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Cronin intercepted a Mountlake Terrace pass and then preceded to engineer a six-play, 58-yard Seagull drive that ended in a Chris Daoust 2-yard plunge into the end zone. Cronin completed two passes on the drive for 27 and 20 yards and also had a 14-yard run.

With a touchdown lead going into the second half, it was time for the Seagulls’ defense to turn up the intensity. And that they did.

Except for an 80-yard pass play from Mountlake Terrace quarterback Brian Ellersick to Dan Boxley, the Everett defense absolutely shutdown the Hawks. Everett caused three fumbles and recovered all three, intercepted a pass, forced the Hawk’s to turn the ball over on downs and forced them to punt on Mountlake Terrace’s six other possessions in the second-half.

“Our defense played great,” said Lawrence. “And a lot of credit has to go to Roger Haug, Will Soren and Ron Burdett, who put together a good defensive scheme tonight.”

As for Everett’s scoring in the second-half, Cronin added to his earlier heroics when he kept the ball himself on an option run and scampered 72 yards for a score to push the Everett lead to 21-7.

After the Boxley touchdown, Everett put together a late fourth-quarter drive, capped off by a J.D. Mowrer 9-yard run, to again push their lead to two touchdowns.
