Sedro-Woolley claims team title

EVERETT — The Arlington Eagles and Everett Seagulls put forth quite an effort at the Class 3A subregional wrestling tournament Saturday, but neither team could knock off perennial state powerhouse Sedro-Woolley.

The six-time defending 3A state champion Cubs won the meet with 318.5 points. Arlington finished second with 276 points, edging third-place Everett, which scored 269.5.

“I’m very pleased with this team — they’ve done a great job,” said Arlington coach Doug Byers, who added his team benefited from several regular season tournaments against tough competition. “We went looking for the best so that it would pay dividends for us today.”

The double-elimination tournament, which began Friday evening, concluded Saturday. The top four placers in each weight class advanced to next weekend’s regional tournament at Liberty High School in Renton, with the fifth-place finisher serving as an alternate.

Sedro-Woolley — which advanced 12 wrestlers to next weekend’s regional tournament — led the way with six finalists and five individual champions.

Arlington advanced nine wrestlers and had one champion from five finalists.

Arlington’s Chris Myers won the Eagles’ lone title at 160 pounds in what was arguably one of the day’s most exciting matches.

Myers faced off with Everett’s Taylor Boyce in the finals and the pair wrestled to a scoreless tie through the first three periods and the one-minute overtime period. Starting with the second overtime in high school wrestling, each competitor gets 30 seconds to escape from the bottom position.

“I knew it was going to be a patient match — (Boyce) is a strong kid,” Myers said. “I just had to wait for my opportunity and capitalize.”

His opportunity came in the second overtime. Myers started on the bottom and escaped after about 15 seconds. He then kept Boyce from escaping during the final 30 seconds to secure the 1-0 victory.

“My coaches worked really hard on getting us in shape for that,” Myers added. “(It) comes down to this at the end of the year in these close matches.”

Garnering second-place finishes for Arlington were Nathan Shortt (135), Dom Mangini (140), Richard Perkins (215) and Bryant Dickerson (285).

Everett advanced 10 wrestlers, had six finalists and won two individual titles.

“We’re a young team and I figured that we might take fourth or fifth, so we did a lot better (than that),” Everett coach Brien Elliott said. “So I’m pleased with that — the kids wrestled really well.”

Michael Bearer (112) and Jake Anstett (285) took home individual titles for the Seagulls. Cary Irwin (152), Boyce (160), Alec Bird (171) and Kramer Burns (189) each took second for Everett, exceeding the expectations their coach had.

“I feel that this (district) is really solid,” Elliott said. “I feel that most of the guys that made it through this will make it to state.”

Byers also feels confident in his wrestlers’ ability to advance past next week’s regional.

“I feel like we have a really good match up next week,” he said. “We feel like this is a tougher tournament than getting to state, so this is where we really wanted to put our emphasis.”

Shorecrest finished eighth with 77 points and advanced three wrestlers. Lynnwood also advanced three wrestlers, highlighted by Rodson Ubungen’s second-place finish at 112 pounds. The Royals finished ninth with 59 points. Meadowdale finished seventh with 80.5 points, but had no placers in the top four.
