As I mentioned, I spent a good part of last Sunday at the Imagine Children’s Museum with my granddaughter. The same day, some Mini-Sprint and Outlaw Compact Series drivers were there to display their cars, as well as motocross long-distance jumper Ryan Capes (more on Ryan below).
Above is a photo of the latest to get bit by the racing bug. Thanks to Kim and Clint Lang, Mark Weedin, Rod Helmuth, Steve and Skyler Jennings, and Rainiere.
Ryan Capes of Mill Creek, already holds the world record for motorcycles jumps, a 390-plus foot lead on July 30, 2008 at Toe’s MX Park in Royal City, Wash.
How to top that? How about winning a gold medal at the Summer X-Games July 30-Aug. 2 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Capes said winning gold in the Best Trick category was his goal, and he’s already submitted a nomination video to ESPN for the invitation-only event. Capes wouldn’t say what the trick was — go figure — but he did let on that he’s landed it two out of three times he’s tried it.

I had the pleasure of exchanging emails with Dan Boys of Aldershot, England, recently. Dan has made the long trek across the ocean to race late-models at Evergreen Speedway for the past several years although in this economy we may not see him this year.
Dan has been racing, though, and you can see more of that at his team’s Web site, www.revolutionracing.co.uk
Here’s part of what Dan had to say:
“I have actually competed this year, this time across the channel in Belgium. The promoters at Warneton Speedway have launched a new series this year called the ‘European Late Model Series’ which is made up mostly of Lefthander NASCAR late model style cars but also includes the cars from the defunct ‘ASCAR’ series which was UK based and ran cars from the old ASA National Tour.
They were imported over a few years back as part of a series that intended to be as big as NASCAR but never really took off. So, the promoters at Warneton merged the dozen or so NASCAR short track cars and the ASCARs together to form the new series for owners of ASCARs who still want to race.
The series is doing well with respectable car counts from around 12-20 depending on what else is happening and the type of event the track puts on. It has a very cosmopolitan feel to it, with drivers taking part from the UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal.
Plus the promoters are funding TV coverage which has been beamed out to most parts of Europe. I took part at Easter and enjoyed a brief moment of glory, leading for about 14 laps in Easter Sunday’s final race before coming home 7th.”
