The Huskies got the seed (No. 4) and the location (Portland) that many were expecting, but playing the SEC tournament champs in the first round was a bit of a surprise for the Huskies.
“I was surprised that Mississippi State was a 13 seed, no doubt,” Lorenzo Romar said. “You win the SEC conference tournament, it just seems like you’d be better than a 13 seed, but that’s what it is.”
And even though there was no doubt that the Huskies were tournament bound, seeing it officially on the TV screen was still a big deal for the Huskies.
“It was magical,” said junior foward Quincy Pondexter “It was something that I’ve always watched every Sunday. Even the last two years when we weren’t in, I’ve always watched selection Sunday. It’s just a great feeling.”
Pondexter and others also noted that getting six Pac-10 teams into the tournament makes the Huskies’ Pac-10 title look that much better.
“It definitely makes us feel a lot better because it justifies our wins a lot,” he said. “We played against great teams this whole year in the Pac-10. It was kind of hard to go through the year not being as respected as we should have been.”
