MOUNT VERNON – Shorecrest blew through Ferndale on its way to state Thursday.
The Scots posted a 5-0 win in the championship game of the 3A District 1 playoffs at Mount Vernon High School and open state tournament play Tuesday at Shoreline Stadium against the seventh seed from the District 3/4 tourney.
“We had a great team effort,” Shorecrest coach Drew Thompson said. “The team is really coming together and playing good ball.”
Ranked No. 3 in the nation in the soccer coaches’ poll, Shorecrest is vying for its second state title in three years.
The Scots wasted little time putting away Ferndale, scoring on a corner kick in the 15th minute.
“We had excellent execution, Thompson said. “(Jonathan) Cho had a great ball to the near post and Mike (Ehrhart) buried it with a header.”
The Scots scored three goals in the first 13 minutes of he second half to put the game out of reach.

Arlington 1, Lynnwood 0: At Mount Vernon, Michael Baxter’s goal off a free kick in the 10th minute proved to be enough as the Eagles won the 3A District 1 loser-out playoff game. Arlington will face the Ferndale-Shorecrest loser at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon in a winner-to-state, loser-out game.

Lakewood 5, Archbishop Murphy 0: At Duvall, Peter Karrenberg registered the shutout in goal for Lakewood in the 2A District 1 playoff game. The Cougars advanced to a winner-to-state, loser-out game against Sultan at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cedarcrest High School.

Anacortes 3, Granite Falls 2 (shootout): At Granite Falls, Sean Nelson scored twice, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers lost 4-2 in the shootout, ending their run in the 2A District 1 playoffs.
