Shorecrest bounces back from first-game defeat

SHORELINE – The Shorecrest Scots proved Thursday that in volleyball you can take a hit but stay on your feet.

The Scots were crushed 25-12 in the first game, but bounced back to defeat Edmonds-Woodway in the final three games 25-19, 25-23, 25-19 in a Wesco South match.

“They jumped on us good in that first game, but we got off to a better start in the next,” Shorecrest head coach Dave Morehouse said.

With the win, the Scots (3-0 in division, 8-0 overall) moved into sole possession of first place in the Wesco South.

Junior Anna Herold added 25 assists and 11 digs and Kerry Clavadetscher added 11 kills and 11 assists for a Scots team that qualified for the 3A state tournament in 2005.

The Warriors (2-1, 5-3) were led by Sharon Kelley’s 33 assists and Cailin Fellows 18 kills and 16 digs. Senior Melissa Albrecht had 21 digs for Edmonds-Woodway.

Lynnwood 3, Shorewood 1: At Lynnwood, Gabby Vo had nine kills and 16 digs and Kaytlyn Dill finished with 10 kills and three blocks to lead Lynnwood (2-1 in division, 3-5 overall) to a 25-19, 25-10, 15-25, 25-22 victory in the Wesco South contest. Caroline Soules had 11 kills and Katie Dapper had 11 kills and six blocks for Shorewood (0-3, 2-7).

Jackson 3, Mariner 1: At Everett, Brittany Eskridge had 14 kills, Laura Seekins had nine kills and Brittany Cain added six kills and five blocks as Jackson (2-0 in division, 7-1 overall) defeated Mariner 25-12, 15-25, 25-13, 25-18. Brittany Ruscha had seven kills, three blocks and two digs; Caitlyn Hayden had seven kills, and Shannon Peterson had 17 assists, three blocks and four digs for the Mauraders (1-2, 2-6).

Kamiak 3, Mountlake Terrace 0: At Mountlake Terrace, Julia Church led Kamiak to the Wesco South sweep, 25-8, 25-15, 26-24. Devin Larson added 31 assists and four aces for the Knights (2-1 division, 5-3 overall). Cassie Hansen led the Hawks (0-2, 4-4) with 15 kills.

Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Stanwood 2: At Stanwood, Nancy Couls had 15 kills and 16 digs and Laura Degerness added 14 kills, three aces and 20 digs as Marysville-Pilchuck remained unbeaten in Wesco North play with a 21-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 17-15 win. Kristeen Juarez added 18 digs and 12 kills for the Tomahawks (3-0 in league, 5-3 overall). Megan Amundson had 13 kills and Dawnia Sudweeks added nine for the Spartans (1-2, 5-3).

Oak Harbor 3, Meadowdale 2: At Oak Harbor, Oak Harbor (5-2 overall) needed five sets to win a close non-league match against Meadowdale, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19, 24-26, 15-7. Jennifer Jansen led the Wildcats with 27 kills. Allie Demopoulos led the Mavericks (0-2, 2-6) with 15 kills.

Snohomish 3, Arlington 2: At Snohomish, Stephanie Gausman and Larissa Dirks combined for 20 kills to lead Snohomish (1-2 division, 0-8 overall) to the 25-13, 22-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-8 Wesco North victory. Keesha Carpenter had 37 assists and Piper Lycke had 22 digs for Arlington (0-2, 0-8).

Everett 3, Cascade 1: At Everett, Jacqui Bayne had 28 assists and 16 digs and Maureen Frauenholtz added four aces and 15 kills as Everett upended Cascade (2-1 division, 3-5 overall) 25-11, 25-11, 20-25, 25-23 in a Wesco North match. Lauren Hope (22 assists) and Erika Hornyak (18 digs) also contributed for the Seagulls (1-2, 3-5).

Monroe 3, Lake Stevens 0: At Lake Stevens, Tarah Petrick had 25 assists, Kiley Simmons finished with four digs and Kylin Munoz had 14 kills and served five aces to lead Monroe (2-0 in division, 7-0 overall) to a 25-11, 25-9, 25-18 sweep in the Wesco North match. Sandy Crannell made 21 perfect passes and Katie Matsumura had five blocks for Lake Stevens (0-2, 0-7).

Archbishop Murphy 3, Cedarcrest 0: At Mill Creek, Patti Reeves had 28 assists and seven aces to lead Archbishop Murphy to the 25-14, 28-26, 25-17 Cascade Conference sweep of Cedarcrest (5-3 in league and overall). Megan Robinson had 10 kills and Allie Gotz added 12 digs for the Wildcats (7-1, 7-2). For Cedarcrest, Kristen McKinlay had two aces, 10 kills and five blocks; Amber Shields had 20 assists and 10 digs, and Betsy Anderson had seven kills.

South Whidbey 3, Coupeville 0: At Langely, the Falcons picked up a Cascade Conference sweep, taking the games 25-16, 25-22, 25-23. Chelsey Backus led South Whidbey (4-4 league and overall) with 18 assists and seven kills. Leah Mouw paced the Wolves (2-6, 3-6), serving 19-for-19.

King’s 3, Granite Falls 0: At Granite Falls, King’s continued its winning streak, keeping their perfect 8-0 season alive with a 25-11, 25-14, 25-14 victory over Granite Falls (3-5) in the Cascade Conference match. For King’s Kimberly Mayhle had 10 kills and 12 digs, Kailey Trautmann had 17 kills and 15 digs, Hannah Mason had 11 digs and four aces and Anna Cesari had 25 assists.

Lakewood 3, Sultan 2: At Sultan, the Turks (0-8 league, 0-9 overall) took Lakewood to the limit, but in the end it was Cougars (3-5, 4-5) pulling out the Cascade Conference win, 28-30, 25-16, 26-16, 19-25, 16-14. Teiton Mizell paced Lakewood with 27 assists and four kills. She served 17-for-17. Amanda Gregory added 12 kills. For Sultan, Ashley Parker and Marissa Donelly had five aces each and Emma Donaldson had six assists.

La Conner 3, Darrington 0: At Darrington, La Conner (8-0 in league, 9-0 overall) remained unbeaten with a 25-10, 25-17, 25-18 Northwest 1A/2B League sweep of Darrington. Darrington (5-3, 7-3) was led by Mandy Powell’s 24 assists and Natasha Green’s six kills.
