SHORELINE – Whitney Michiels’ 3-pointer sparked a 20-10 second-quarter run by the Shorecrest girls basketball team en route to a 69-57 victory Monday night over Kamiak.

Trailing 19-17 in the second quarter after a 5-0 run by Kamiak opened the period, Michiels made a 3-pointer that put Shorecrest ahead for good in a Western Conference South game that had district playoff implications.

The victory moved Shorecrest (10-6 league, 12-6 overall) into a tie with Jackson for the second playoff spot in the upcoming Class 4A district tournament. Kamiak (13-3, 13-5) remained in the No. 1 spot. Meadowdale is the Wesco South leader, but will play in the 3A district.

Michiels scored a career-high 25 points on 9-for-18 shooting and collected 10 rebounds.

“(Whitney) had a real solid game,” said Shorecrest coach Don Dalziel. “Her shot was on and she knew it.”

Behind by eight points with three minutes left, Kamiak began fouling Shorecrest in an attempt to get back in the game. The Scots went 14-for-18 from the free throw line in the final minutes to cap off the victory.

“We had a great team effort tonight,” Dalziel said.
