Shorecrest girls edge Everett 55-53

EVERETT — Mary Tseng converted a three-point play in the final minute of regulation to help lift the Shorecrest girls basketball team to a 55-53 victory over Everett in Wednesday’s Western Conference South meeting.

Tseng scored seven of her 10 points in the final quarter for the Scots (6-6 league, 6-8 overall), who are a half-game behind Everett (6-5, 6-6) for the fourth and final playoff berth with seven games remaining.

"That three-point play really took the wind out of our sails," Everett assistant coach Kim Pearson said. "We got to within a point and that dropped us back to four points."

Tseng’s three-point play wasn’t the only thing that hurt Everett’s chances. The Seagulls missed five of seven free throws in the fourth quarter and went 6-for-16 in the game.

"Free throws aren’t normally a problem for us this season," Pearson said. "This was just an off game for us."

Shorecrest’s Banimi Lawson scored a game-high 14 points and Janina Boecherer added 11 points, all of which came in the Scots 18-9 second-quarter run. After falling behind by six points in the first quarter, Shorecrest went on to outscore Everett 28-18 in the second and third quarters.

"This game went back and forth," Pearson said. "We had a lot of opportunities, but we missed them."

Devonne Austin scored 11 points to lead Everett.
