Shorecrest posts another one-run win over Terrace

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – If history was any indicator, Friday’s game between the Mountlake Terrace and Shorecrest softball teams was going to be a close one.

And indeed it was.

With each of their last three meetings decided by one run, Shorecrest and Mountlake Terrace made it four straight with the Scots’ 1-0 victory in the Western Conference South showdown.

“We seem to play them close every year,” said Mountlake Terrace coach Kim Stewart. “We’ve definitely had some great games with them.”

The close game was no fluke. Both teams came in unbeaten and vying for first-place supremacy. Also, both teams were throwing their ace pitcher. Shorecrest brought Kristina Thorson, while Mountlake Terrace countered with Katy Barstad.

The face-off lived up to expectations.

Barstad gave up only one run on six hits, while striking out 12 Shorecrest batters. But against Thorson that one run can be a heartbreaker, and it turned out to be just that. Thorson struck out 15 batters and surrendered only two hits en route to blanking the Hawks.

Shorecrest’s run was the result of a dreaded lead-off walk. Following the walk to begin the second inning, the Scots got back-to-back singles to produce the only run they needed.

Thorson and not reported. Barstad and Miller. WP-Thorson (4-0). LP-Barstad (3-1). Records-Shorecrest 4-0 overall. Mountlake Terrace 3-1.

Shorewood 5, Meadowdale 2: Ahead by two runs going into the sixth inning, Shorewood broke the game open when Shannon Sullivan and Jamie Spenard hit back-to-back doubles and Jen Kristjansson followed with a single to make the score 5-1. Kristjansson was 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead Shorewood in a Wesco South game.
