Shorecrest tops Anacortes for 3rd place in 2A district soccer

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — Junior forward Kevin Musar scored twice in the early minutes, and Shorecrest went on to a 3-0 victory over Anacortes in the game for third and fourth places at the Class 2A District 1 soccer tournament at Sedro Woolley High School.

Musar opened the scoring after a long throw-in into the box. Other players had a chance at the loose ball, but Musar was in the right place to get a foot on the ball and send it into the net past Anacortes goalkeeper Isaac Tiessen.

About a minute later, Shorecrest’s Jack Neffner sent a long ball from the right side of midfield to Musar breaking toward the goal from the left wing. The ball touched a defender and bounced to Musar who sent a shot into the right side of the net.

The Scots added their third goal with a little over 10 minutes to play in the game when senior forward Cesar Ruiz-Calvillo gathered a loose ball in front of the net and, amidst a crowd of players, executed a back kick into the goal.

Shorecrest coach Drew Thompson called the game “kind of an uninspired effort,” and said the two early goals “probably helped with the uninspired-ness, if that’s a word. You get two goals early, and then they kind of sit back and relax. … But they got the job done.”

Shorecrest and Anacortes both advance to the upcoming state tournament. The Scots expect to be on the road next week against the winner of Saturday’s North Kitsap-Lindbergh game.

“I love this team,” Thompson said. “It’s a good bunch of guys (with) a lot of experience. A lot of these guys have been to the state finals before in 3A (in 2013), so the experience is there. We’ve got a strong team here … so I like our chances,” he added.
