Shorewood edges Kamiak 2-1 in overtime

MUKILTEO — The Shorewood Thunderbirds won an overtime thriller 2-1 at Kamiak on Tuesday in the Wesco South opener for both teams.

“It was a great game,” Kamiak coach Beth Stewart said. “We knew it was going to be a battle and it was.”

Anastaja Norins opened the scoring for the Thunderbirds with an unassisted goal in the sixth minute. Stewart said it took a little while for her young defense to get comfortable.

“Things settled down (after the Shorewood goal),” she said. “We responded very well to that.”

Taylor Stanley evened the game in the 65th minute off an assist from Kendall Stanley.

Norins scored an unassisted game-winner for the Thunderbirds (1-0) in the 84th minute.

Kamiak fell to 0-1 on the season.

“I told the girls, ‘these are the best games to win,’ ” Stewart said, “But they’re also the worst ones to lose.”

Shorecrest 1, Edmonds-Woodway 0: At Shoreline, Agen Heffernan scored off an assist from Alexis Ramos in the 25th minute as the Scots opened Wesco South play with the victory over the Warriors. Caroline Towles recorded the shutout in goal for Shorecrest, which improved to 1-0. Edmonds-Woodway fell to 0-1.

Glacier Peak 5, Mountlake Terrace 0: At Mountlake Terrace, Brooke Gilbert and Malloy Leahy each had a pair of goals for Glacier Peak giving it the Wesco South victory in the team’s inaugural game. Gilbert started the scoring early, sending an unassisted goal into the net three minutes into the game. Sam Long sent another goal in seven minutes later. Glacier Peak had four goals in the first half and scored the last goal just two minutes into the second half. Brooke Stack had an assist, every other goal was unassisted. Nicole Giovine earned the shutout for Glacier Peak which is now 1-0 in league and overall. Mountlake Terrace is 0-1.

Jackson 6, Mariner 0: At Everett, freshman Cara Wegner and junior Brianna Ellis each had two goals and an assist for Jackson in its Wesco South win at Everett Memorial Stadium. Katie Reese and Taylor Hutchins also contributed goals and Megan Bolmes, Reese and Lori Deland had assists. KC Wilson and Kayla Beer split time in goal for Jackson, collectively earning the shutout. Jackson is now 1-0 in league and overall and Mariner is 0-1.

Meadowdale 7, Lynnwood 0: At Lynnwood, Julia Fjortoft of Meadowdale had a hat trick and an assist in the Wesco South victory. Erin Wyatt contributed two goals, Maddie Null had a goal and an assist and Marcail McDonald scored a goal as well. Tanya Zicketoose and Abbie Gustafson split time in goal for Meadowdale, with Gustafson making six saves and Zicketoose making two. Meadowdale is 1-0 in league and overall, Lynnwood is 0-1.

Lake Stevens 3, Marysville-Pilchuck 0: At Marysville, Taryn Wright had two goals, Annie Thomas added a goal and an assist and Kinslee Isaman had two assists to lead Lake Stevens to a season-opening, Wesco North victory over Marysville-Pilchuck. Kaitlin Mackenzie had the shutout in goal for Lake Stevens.

Everett 5, Arlington 0: At Arlington, Brittany McMullen scored two goals, Alysia Letourneau added a goal and a two assists and Cammie Monro added a goal and an assist to lead Everett to the Wesco North win. Elizabeth Dickson added a goal in the 47th minute and Sele Vance had an assist. Emily Nesting recorded the shutout for the Seagulls. Chelsea Boulton was in goal for the Eagles.

Snohomish 3, Cascade 1: At Snohomish, Melanie Bjornethun scored a goal and had two assists as the Panthers improved to 1-0 on the season with the Wesco North win. Shillia Crosby and Juliet Desmarais had the other two goals for the Panthers. Sam Munger scored the lone goal for the Bruins, who fell to 0-1.

Monroe 2, Oak Harbor 1: At Oak Harbor, Monroe took the Wesco North season opener. Ronnie Keenan scored Monroe’s first goal in the 32nd minute off a Casey Newmann assist. Lorilei Ritzert put Monroe (1-0 league and overall) up 2-0 in the 60th minute with a goal assisted by Alyssa Drew. Carson McKole put Oak Harbor (0-1) on the board with an unassisted goal around the 65th minute but the Wildcats were unable to get any closer. Kayla Avelar and Lynzee Felder shared goalkeeping duties for Monroe and Jordan Baucher tended goal for Oak Harbor.

Burlington-Edison 3, Lakewood 1: At Marysville, after a scoreless first half, Burlington-Edison scored three goals in a 15-minute span of the non-conference game at Lakewood High School. Each goal in the game was unassisted with Bailey Gates, Carolyn Ranten and Holly Cradley each scoring a goal for Burlington-Edison (1-0 overall). Danielle Knapp scored Lakewood’s goal. Goalkeeper Miranda Head made eight saves for Lakewood (0-1).

Granite Falls 7, Concrete 0: At Granite Falls, sophomore Katie Cashman recorded a hat trick, scoring three goals and leading Granite Falls to the shutout, non-league win. Rose Livermore added a pair of goals and Cacia Stevens and KatyAnn Powers each had a goal for the Tigers. Goalkeepers Kelsey Carlson and Sarah Hensley combined on the shutout.

Cedarcrest 1, Bellingham 1: At Duvall, Rachael Kevin scored the game’s first goal in the ninth minute off an assist from Brooke Chapman. Kevin then had to play goalkeeper after an injury to the Red Wolves’ other keeper, allowing the game-tying goal in the 78th minute in the non-league opener for both teams.

Mount Vernon Christian 4, Coupeville 2: At Coupeville, Alexa Henthil and Brittany Morren scored goals for the Wolves in a non-league, season-opening loss to the Hurricanes.

Volleyball

Monroe 3, Everett 0: At Monroe, Kylin Munoz had 22 kills and 11 digs, Megan Birch added 10 kills and Kaitlyn Drew had 32 assists as Monroe (1-0 overall) defeated Everett (0-1) 25-18, 25-23, 25-21 in a non-league match. Ally Lund (eight kills, 11 digs) and Mollie Postma (five aces, 25 assists) led Everett.

Arlington 3, Ferndale 1: At Ferndale, after dropping the first game, Arlington reeled off three straight to defeat Ferndale 24-26, 25-10, 25-20, 31-29 in a non-league match. Setter Kelsey Cvaban had 30 assists for Arlington and outside hitter Bre Covey had 17 kills. Arlington middle blocker Kenzie Jorgenson had 12 kills and 10 blocks with the 10th block clinching the match. The match opened both teams seasons putting Arlington at 1-0 overall and Ferndale at 0-1.

Shoreline Christian 3, Seattle Lutheran 1: At Shoreline, the Crusaders dropped the first set 26-24 before coming back to take the non-league match by winning three straight 25-23, 25-10, 28-26. Anne-Marie Visser had 29 assists, Angie DeKoekkoek had 14 kills and Laura Kredit had 16 kills to lead Shoreline Christian, which improved to 1-0 on the season.

Edmonds-Woodway 3, Woodinville 0: At Woodinville, Leigh Fishback had 30 assists and nine digs and Cailin Fellows added 15 kills to lead Edmonds-Woodway to the 25-14, 25-13, 25-19 non-league sweep of Woodinville. Alex Storino had 14 digs and Haley Scott had five kills, three blocks and four assists for the Warriors. Woodinville was led by Carmen Vasilatos (seven kills, five assists) and Nikki Connelly (10 assists, three aces).

Oak Harbor 3, Cascade 0: At Everett, Melanie Cone had 23 assists, Jennifer Jansen added nine kills and three blocks and Jessica Muzzall finished with seven kills leading Oak Harbor to the 25-19, 25-16, 25-18 non-league sweep over Cascade. Danielle Love (eight kills) and Katie Brush (four blocks) led the Bruins.

Bishop Blanchet 3, Meadowdale 1: At Lynnwood, the Mavericks won the first set 27-25 before dropping the next three 25-14, 25-17, 25-19. Madi Seeger had 15 digs, Megan Nelson had 26 assists, Lynsey Rohrbach had seven kills and three blocks, and Hailey Helber had six kills for Meadowdale in the non-league match. Meadowdale dropped to 0-1 on the season.

Shorecrest 3, Shorewood 0: At Shoreline, Kerry Clavadetscher led Shorecrest to the 25-13, 25-9, 25-9 non-league sweep. Clavadetscher had 15 assists, 11 digs and three kills and teammate Nicole Swenson added four kills and three aces for the Scots (1-0). Shorewood (0-1) was led by Gloria Tseng’s eight kills and Carolyn Stransky’s 10 assists.

Lynnwood 3, Mariner 2: At Everett, Annie Ogle had 21 kills for Lynnwood as it edged Mariner 25-21, 25-23, 15-25, 22-25, 15-10 in a non-=league match. Lacee Hill had 35 assists for Lynnwood and teammates Jessika Barlow and Kelcey McCartney had 11 and seven kills, respectively. Brittany Ruscha had 19 kills for Mariner and teammate Catelyn Kelly had 20 digs. The season opener puts Lynnwood at 1-0 league and overall and Mariner at 0-1.

Snohomish 3, Marsyville-Pilchuck 2: At Snohomish, libero Natalie Kaltbrunner had 27 digs and teammate Shelby Souther added 16 kills to lead Snohomish to the 21-25, 27-25, 13-25, 26-24, 15-9 non-league win over Marysville-Pilchuck. Maddi Fouts added eight kills for the Panthers (1-0 overall). Jadelyn Thompson led the Tomahawks (0-1) with 45 digs. Brittney Fitzmaurice had 46 assists and Jenna Welsh had 23 kills for Marysville-Pilchuck.

Stanwood 3, Lake Stevens 2: At Lake Stevens, the Spartans rallied to win the final three sets after dropping the first two, taking a 23-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-12 non-league win. Leah Titus had 18 digs, Deanna Hoppe had 11 kills and Chelsea Campbell had 32 assists to lead Stanwood (1-0). Marchelle Bostic was 25-for-25 serving with three aces and Lindsay Walter and Chloe Rost combined for 16 kills to lead the Vikings (0-1).

Lakeside 3, Darrington 0: At Darrington, the Loggers lost 25-15, 25-12, 25-16 in the non-league opener for both schools. Hailey Wales had seven kills and four blocks and Mandy Powell had five kills and four aces for Darrington, which graduated nine seniors off last year’s team that placed fifth in the 2B state tournament.

Providence Classical Christian 3, Highland Christian 2: At Lynnwood, Providence Classical Christian defeated Highland Christian 25-22, 14-25, 25-17, 21-25, 15-10 in a Northwest 1B League match.

North Sound Christian 3, Skykomish 1: At Skykomish, North Sound Christian freshman setter Malorie Mahler had four aces, seven kills and 20 assists in the 25-17, 25-14, 22-25, 25-17 Northwest 1B League victory. NSC middle blocker Chantelle Meeks had two aces, six kills and two blocks and senior outside hitter Victoria Patterson had four aces, four kills, eight digs and a block.
