Shorewood relies on 3’s and frees

SHORELINE – Outside shooting and free throws were the keys to Shorewood’s 60-48 victory over Wesco South rival Mariner Tuesday.

The Thunderbirds (9-2 in league, 11-2 overall) fell behind early but fought back to get and hold a two-point lead through the end of the third quarter.

Early in the game, it became apparent the Marauders’ (6-5, 8-5) plan was to focus on shutting down Shorewood’s inside shooters, Sean Tracey and Rob Diederichs.

“Teams like to defend Sean and Rob, so a key for us was getting the ball to the perimeter players,” Thunderbirds’ coach Jeff Denny said. Shorewood’s guards, John Wood, Alex Burns, Eric Perry and Brock Hartman, combined to score 31 points, 21 of which came from 3-point baskets.

The Thunderbirds’ perimeter success allowed them to move the ball inside in the second half, which created foul shot opportunities.

Shorewood had struggled with free-throw shooting earlier in the season, but in the decisive fourth quarter the Thunderbirds sank 12 of 13 to seal the win.

Mariner’s Raymond Fry was the game’s leading scorer with 22 points, 19 of which came in the second half.
