EVERETT – Shorewood track standout Kelsey McCallum knows what it takes to win a two-mile run: experience and savvy planning.
Each of which worked perfectly as she rode the draft of Edmonds-Woodway’s Tiffany Passi for nearly the entire 3,200 meters before breaking out on the final 100 meters to capture the Western Conference South title in the divisional meet held Wednesday at Goddard Stadium.
“Having experience I knew to hide behind her (Passi) for most of the race,” said McCallum, who has won the two-mile event several times this season. “I used her to guard me from the wind. I did that for six or so laps. I have to work off someone and that’s what I did.”
Kelsey, a junior, finished with a time of 11 minutes, 47 seconds while Passi came in second with at 11:52. Celia MacLean finished third (11:57), Kali Albright (12:09) fourth and Becky Barclay (12:14) was fifth.
“She ran a smart race,” Passi said. “I was leading for most of the race and it is tough to lead a race the entire way. She rode my draft and then she kicked. She ran a great race and I am happy for her.”
The girls 3,200 and three field events were the only championship events held on Wednesday. The top eight finishers and next two best times in the remaining eight track events advance to the championship round on Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Goddard Stadium.
“This has been a real breakout year for me,” Passi said. “I am very happy with my finish in the 3,200. I have trained harder this year. I eat better and I get more sleep. This has been the highlight of my season.”
Meadowdale’s Kelsey Nagel won the South title in the discus with a distance of 115 feet, 5 inches. Shorewood’s Val Wishaar captured the javelin (106-6) and Shorecrest’s Liz Russell won the long jump with a distance of 16-1.
Krystel Davis of Everett qualified for Friday’s 100 hurdles after winning the event on Wednesday with a time of 16.48. Also qualifying are Edmonds-Woodway’s Erin Sieh, Everett’s Alex Jamieson, Shorewood’s Nanda McCormick (who also won the 300 hurdles), and Emily Handley.
Monaka White of Mariner won the 100-meter dash and Shorewood’s Akosua Fordjour finished second with a time of 12.92. Fordjour also qualified for the 200.
