Shorewood takes control of Wesco South

SHORELINE — Facing one of their toughest challenges of the boys swimming season, Shorewood and first-year head coach Scott Kelley expected no more than a tie with Kamiak.

Instead, the Thunderbirds pushed beyond their expectations and inched closer to their preseason goal of winning the Western Conference South Division title with a 101-85 victory against Kamiak on Tuesday at Shoreline pool.

Shorewood’s unexpected triumph was huge in several ways, Kelley said. "It probably means that we’re going to basically win our division. It’s a pretty big meet. It’s kind of neat for the seniors to get it."

Several seniors did their part to propel Shorewood (5-0 in league, 5-1 overall). Senior Nick Joy swam a personal best in the 100-yard freestyle, and senior teammate Charlie Maier swam on two first-place relays.

Garrett Gentling of Shorewood swam a state-meet qualifying time of 56.51 seconds in 100 backstroke.

Zach Harrington won two individual events (50 freestyle and 100 backstroke) for Kamiak (2-1, 3-2).

Next, the Thunderbirds battle Meadowdale on Thursday at Shoreline Pool. The meet will be Shorewood’s toughest remaining league meet, Kelley said.

"I think Meadowdale will be pretty good competition, but we have better depth."
