Shorewood takes over first place

SHORELINE — The girls from Shorecrest knew they needed to swim perfectly and catch some breaks to beat Shorewood.

They didn’t and they didn’t.

Tara McIntyre recorded a state qualifying time in winning one of two individual events and she swam on two winning relay teams to help lift the Thunderbirds to a 104-82 victory over the Scots in a meet to decide first place in the Wesco South Thursday afternoon at Shoreline Pool.

“Shorewood just had more depth,” Shorecrest head coach Bill Murray said. “We had a couple of (disqualifications) that hurt us. A couple mental errors didn’t help, either.

“We had to do everything right and we didn’t.”

The teams entered the meet tied atop the Wesco South. With the victory, Shorewood improved to 4-0 in league and 6-0-1 overall while Shorecrest dropped to second place at 3-1, 6-1-0.

McIntrye was first in the 50-yard freestyle and her finish of 5 minutes, 18:50 seconds in winning the 500 freestyle was a Class 4A state qualifying time. McIntyre also swam on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.

“I watched Shorewood swim against Jackson, when they had six state times,” Murray said of the Thunderbirds’ 92-91 victory on Tuesday. “I knew we’d need some breaks. Tara McIntyre, Laurin Williams … they’re strong.”

Williams won the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke for Shorewood and joined McIntyre on the winning 400 freestyle relay team.

Laura Millet captured the Scots’ two invidual wins, crossing the line first in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

“We both had strong returning teams (from last year),” Murray said. “Their newcomers are just a bit better. We’re stronger than we were last year, but so are they.”
