Shorewood takes South title

SHORELINE — Not even a power outage could dampen the spirit of the Shorewood swim team.

The Thunderbirds clinched the Wesco South dual-meet title and wrapped up an undefeated season with a 100-56 win over second-place Kamiak.

Although only eight events were completed due to a power outage at the Shoreline Pool, Shorewood had already accumulated enough points to win the meet. It finished first in all events except for diving, which was won by Kamiak’s Fiona Weeks.

“Julia Gentling had a good meet today,” Shorewood coach Susie McDowell said. Gentling won the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke and swam on two winning relays.

Laurin Williams contributed to the win with victories in the 200 and 500 freestyle races. She had a state qualifying time of five minutes, 20.11 seconds in the 500.

“We had a great season and are looking forward to the post season,” McDowell said. “The kids stepped up when they really had to.”
