Shorewood tennis team stays unbeaten

SHORELINE – After knocking off Shorecrest 6-1 on Wednesday, the Shorewood boys tennis team finds itself alone atop the Western Conference South Division with a perfect 7-0 record.

Opponents might have expected nothing less from the Thunderbirds, but Shorewood coach Corliss Liekkio didn’t predict perfection.

“I truly expected to have lost at least a couple (team) matches by now,” he said. “I’m pleasantly surprised.”

Liekkio’s amazement is understandable, considering Shorewood lost 2003 graduate Jeff Jablonski, who finished second in singles at the Class 4A tournament last year. However, the Thunderbirds worked hard in the offseason and returned plenty of talent.

“I still have quite a few kids returning,” Liekkio said, “and we have a lot of depth.”

Depth provides flexibility, as Shorewood seniors Vincent Ma and Peter Reni displayed Wednesday. Ma and Reni, who have played as doubles teammates for three years, successfully switched to singles. Ma won at No. 2, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, and Reni prevailed at No. 4, 6-1, 6-3.

Still, Shorecrest (3-4 in league and overall) pushed four of the matches to a third set. Senior Chad Frisk grabbed the Scots’ lone point, winning 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5) at No. 3 singles.
