Shorewood wins battle of tennis unbeatens

SHORELINE – The Shorewood Thunderbirds boys tennis team stayed undefeated by snagging a 5-2 hard fought Western Conference South Division victory over previously unbeaten Meadowdale Friday at Shoreview Park in Shoreline.

Shorewood improved its record to 5-0 overall. Meadowdale is 4-1.

The Thunderbirds jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage behind the strong play of juniors Jeff Jablonski, and Justin Michelson at No. 1 and 2 singles. Shorewood also won at No. 4 singles.

But Meadowdale did rally, winning at No. 3 singles behind Justin Morrisson’s 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3 victory and No. 1 doubles behind seniors Chester Staley and Jason Chu, who won in three sets which kept the Mavericks in the meet at 3-2.

“Meadowdale is a good team and we hung in there for the win,” Shorewood head coach Corliss Liekkio said.

Shorewood’s youth (five underclassmen in doubles play) was the key component in its victory as it won the final two doubles matches.

Shorecrest 4, Mountlake Terrace 2: Jared Geddes won 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 4 singles to help Shorecrest to the Wesco South victory.

Edmonds-Woodway 4, Jackson 3: Sean Hirst won at No. 4 doubles to clinch the Wesco South win for Edmonds-Woodway. Freshmen Mike Reading and sophomore Bobby DeWeese won at No. 1 doubles for Jackson.

Lynnwood 4, Mariner 3: With the meet tied 3-3, Lynnwood’s No. 3 doubles team of Chad Peterson and Trong Tran won 6-2, 6-3 to capture the Wesco South meet.
