Shorewood wins in OT to secure district berth

Herald staff

EDMONDS – Nanda McCormack made two free-throws with 20 seconds left in overtime to seal a 58-55 victory for the Shorewood girls basketball team over Edmonds-Woodway Tuesday night.

The victory clinched a district playoff berth for the Thunderbirds (9-7 in league, 9-9 overall) and kept them in the running for the coveted No. 2 spot in the Western Conference South Division.

Behind by four points with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Shorewood had to come from behind just to make it to overtime.

But two quick baskets by Kristen Thompson, who finished with a game-high 22 points, tied the score at 51.

And on Shorewood’s ensuing possession, Caitlin McGinley made what looked like it might have been a game-winning basket to put the Thunderbirds ahead 53-51.

The Warriors had an answer, however, when Katie True hit two ree throws to send the game into overtime.

The only points scored in the overtime period were on free-throws to set up McCormack’s heroics.
