EVERETT — Everett Silvertips defenseman Shayne Brown appears set for an extended stretch on the sidelines.
And the player the Tips brought in to help cover for Brown’s injury isn’t quite ready, either.
Despite the recent addition of defenseman Trevor Bauer to the roster, Everett continues to operate with a bare-bones defense because of injuries.
Brown, a 19-year-old in his fourth season in the WHL, was acquired during the preseason to provide another steadying veteran presence to the Tips blueline. However, Brown appeared in just 11 games before being sidelined because of a hip-flexor injury. He was originally considered day-to-day, but he hasn’t played for more than a month and is now listed as out indefinitely.
“I know he won’t be playing before the holidays, that’s for sure,” Everett coach John Becanic said.
Brown’s injury, plus the trade of Jeff Regier, had left Everett with the minimum six defensemen available, including rookies Drew McDermott and Paul Sohor. The Tips brought in the 18-year-old Bauer, who was cut loose by Prince George earlier this season, to provide a spare and create competition.
However, Bauer arrived injured himself. He picked up a shoulder injury while playing for the Brooks Bandits of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, and as of Wednesday he had yet to participate in a full practice with the team.
“My guess is the earliest he’d play would be next weekend,” Becanic said. “He still has a minor shoulder injury from the Alberta Junior League and we’re not in any need to rush him in. We want to make sure he’s 100-percent healthy before we put him in there.”
