VANCOUVER, B.C.— Logan Aasman and Matt Fonteyne have been the Everett Silvertips’ hard-luck players so far this season.
Friday night the luck changed for both.
Aasman and Fonteyne each scored their first goals of the season as Everett defeated the Vancouver Giants 5-1.
Aasman has had all kinds of scoring chances in Everett’s first 15 games, but hadn’t been able to convert. Meanwhile, Fonteyne went the first 15 games without even recording a point. But both ended their droughts as they each finished with a goal and an assist.
Patrick Bajkov added two goals and Graham Millar had a goal and two assists for Everett (12-1-2-1), which won its sixth straight. The Tips have outscored their opponents 23-7 during that span.
Carter Hart earned the win in goal, making 30 saves.
Dalton Sward scored the lone goal for Vancouver (7-10-0-0). Payton Lee gave up two goals on six shots before being pulled midway through the first period. Cody Porter stopped 20 of 23 in relief.
Everett wasted little time, scoring twice early in the first to chase Lee. Aasman opened the scoring at 2 minutes, 14 seconds, fluttering a backhander over Lee following a faceoff win in the offensive zone to get the monkey off his back. Then at 8:05 Bajkov put a shot from the high slot in off Lee’s glove, making it 2-0 at 8:05 and sending Lee to he bench in favor of Porter.
The goalie switch didn’t change the momentum as Bajkov struck again at 17:21, his shot in transition deflecting off a defender and past Porter to make it 3-0.
Vancouver got on the board 11:26 into the second period. Sward took a shot from the wall that eluded Hart to make it 3-1.
But unlike Wednesday’s game, in which the Tips took a 3-0 lead over Red Deer only to let the Rebels back into the game, Everett this time made sure the Giants didn’t get back into it. The Tips went on the power play and Millar put home a rebound at 15:05 to restore Everett’s three-goal advantage.
Finally, it was Fonteyne who ended his dry spell with 6:44 remaining, as he scored from in front following a feed from Aasman to complete the scoring.
