PORTLAND — Marcus Nguyen and James Stefan scored third-period goals that lifted the Portland Winterhawks past the Everett Silvertips 4-3 in Game 1 of their first-round WHL playoffs series at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Nguyen put Portland ahead 3-2 10 minutes, 59 seconds into the third period and Stefan made it 4-2 less than two minutes later for a crucial insurance goal.
Austin Roest’s second goal of the night pulled Everett within 4-3 at the 16:49 mark of the third, but the Silvertips couldn’t tie it up late.
Nguyen scored twice and Robbie Fromm-Delorme added a goal for the Winterhawks, who scored three goals on the power play. Kyle Shyzowki and Marek Alscher had two assists apiece.
Jackson Berezowski chipped in a goal and Aidan Sutter dished out two assists for Everett.
Portland goaltender Jan Spunar stopped 31 of 34 shots.
Tyler Palmer made 33 saves in 37 chances for Everett.
