Jonathan Harty was named the Everett Silvertips’ captain for the 2007-08 season, the team announced Monday.
The 19-year-old defenseman is in his fourth season with the Silvertips and last season served as an alternate captain. He was selected by the coaches and management.
“I’m extremely honored right now, I don’t really know what to say,” Harty said in a press release. “I have seen so many great captains during my three years here and having the opportunity to follow in their footsteps makes it even more special. I want to prove myself as much as they did. It’s a nice feather in my cap but I won’t change the way that I play or who I am. Hopefully, I can lead the team in a way a leader should.”
Harty became the sixth captain in franchise history, joining Bryan Nathe (2003-04), Mitch Love (2004-05), Torrie Wheat (2005-06), Cody Thoring (2006) and Jason Fransoo (2006-07). The previous five captains were all overagers.
“Jonathan has shown unbelievable leadership both on and off the ice,” Everett coach John Becanic said. “He is the first 19-year old player to be named team captain in the history of the organization and I think that shows a lot about what he brings to our locker room.”
Forwards Zach Hamill and Brennan Sonne and defenseman Dane Crowley were named alternate captains.
