EVERETT — The Everett Silvertips received commitments from two players in advance of this weekend’s preseason tournament at Angel of the Winds Arena.

Forward Andrew Petruk and defenseman Ethan Makokis both signed standard player agreements with the Tips this week, pledging their futures to the organization and making them eligible to participate in preseason games.

Petruk, a 17-year-old from Surrey, B.C., was invited to Everett’s training camp as a free agent. The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder, who had five goals and 17 assists in 35 games with the Valley West Giants U18 AAA team last season, impressed the Tips’ staff enough to warrant the signing.

“At camp we saw some positive signs and growth to his game,” Everett general manager and head coach Dennis Williams said in a press release. “He definitely brings an element that we’ve been looking for in terms of size and heaviness.”

Makokis, a 15-year-old from St. Paul, Alberta, was a fifth-round pick in this year’s WHL prospects draft. The 5-foot-7, 142-pounder had nine goals and 12 assists in 24 games with OHA Edmonton U15 Prep last season, where he was a teammate of Everett’s first-round pick Julien Maze.

“His ability to skate, to create separation, his creativity and his compete all stand out,” Williams said, “He has what I would look at as the whole package for today’s modern defenseman.”

Tips hire equipment manager

Everett has hired Damon Pugerude as its new equipment manager. Pugerude arrives after spending the past six seasons as head trainer and head equipment manager for the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles.
