CALGARY, Alberta — Once again the Everett Silvertips found themselves on the wrong side of a lopsided shot total. Unfortunately for the Tips, they couldn’t overcome it this time.
Everett couldn’t generate anything offensively, and the Tips fell 3-1 to the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday night in a game they were outshot 42-16.
The previous night Everett beat Red Deer 3-2 in a shootout despite being outshot 54-29, thanks to heroics by goaltender Kent Simpson.
Simpson was at it again Saturday, making 39 saves. But the Tips weren’t able to generate any offense to support him. Everett also didn’t do itself any favors by giving Calgary seven power plays while drawing just three.
Cody Sylvester, Trevor Cheek and Jimmy Bubnick scored the goals to lead Calgary (5-6-0-1). Chris Driedger had a quiet night in goal for the Hitmen, called upon to make just 15 saves.
Jari Erricson scored the lone goal for Everett (4-10-0-2).
Everett, which is already without its top defenseman Ryan Murray because of a sprained ankle, played without top goal-scoring threat Tyler Maxwell because of illness.
Calgary dominated the first period, outshooting Everett 17-4, but the Hitmen’s only goal was something of a fluke. Sylvester skied a shot over the goal, but the puck bounced off the glass, back off the crossbar, hit Simpson in the back and went into the goal, giving the Hitmen a 1-0 lead 3 minutes, 45 seconds into the game.
Everett tied it at 7:15. Driedger spilled Brennan Yadlowski’s shot from the point, and Erricson pulled the puck out from under Driedger and scored to make it 1-1.
It looked as though the Tips were going to survive the second period, despite spending much of the period short-handed. But when Everett finally got a power play late in the period, the Hitmen scored while short-handed, Cheek beating Simpson with a shot from the blue line to make it 2-1 with 27 seconds remaining.
The Hitmen put it away at 10:19 of the third. Simpson made a series of big saves, but Bubnick eventually scored with Simpson down.
