Silvertips open second half with a loss

KENNEWICK — It was an inauspicious start to the second half of the season for the Everett Silvertips.

Everett kicked off the second half in losing fashion, falling 5-2 to the Tri-City Americans in Western Hockey League action Thursday night.

Jason Reese scored two goals to lead Tri-City (26-7-1-0), which carried over its momentum from the first half of the season, stretching its winning streak to five games.

Reese snapped a 1-1 tie with a breakaway goal early in the second period. The Americans then broke the game open with three goals in eight minutes midway through the third period.

Colton Yellow Horn also scored for Tri-City, extending his points streak to a league-high 18 games. Shaun Vey and Jarret Toll scored the Americans’ other goals and Chet Pickard made 33 saves in net for Tri-City.

Lukas Vartovnik and Jesse Burt scored for Everett (18-17-0-2). Leland Irving stopped 29 shots in goal for the Tips.

The teams traded goals less than a minute apart midway through the first period.

Tri-City found the net first at 10 minutes, 48 seconds when Reese came away from the boards with the puck and found himself all alone in front. He snapped a shot past Irving to make it 1-0.

But Everett responded just 32 seconds later. A scramble ensued after Chris de la Lande’s shot smacked the crossbar, and it ended with Vartovnik poking the puck in from close range, making it 1-1.

Reese then gave the Americans the lead again 2:20 into the second period. A Tri-City clearance went off the boards and Reese beat the defense to the puck for a breakaway. Reese then beat Irving to make it 2-1.

Yellow Horn added to Tri-City’s lead at 7:16 of the third period, firing a shot under Irving immediately after Kruise Reddick won a faceoff.

The Americans then put the game away with power-play goals less a minute apart. Vey scored at 14:34 when the Tips failed to clear the zone and Yellow Horn was able to feed Vey at the far post. Toll then scored at 15:06 when he gloved the puck while knifing toward goal, set it down and backhanded a shot past a wrong-footed Irving.

Everett scored a consolation goal with 1:51 remaining when Burt banged in a rebound.
