The Everett Silvertips begin their official preparations for the 2008-09 Western Hockey League season today when rookies report for training camp.
Rookie camp, which features the majority of Everett’s 15- and 16-year-old prospects, opens with off-ice testing tonight, continues with scrimmages and practices Thursday through Saturday, then concludes with the rookie Green vs. White game on Sunday. All sessions take place at Comcast Arena and are open to the public.
Approximately 60 players, including defenseman Ryan Murray, the team’s first-round pick in this year’s bantam draft who will be appearing in a Silvertips uniform for the first time, are expected to take part in rookie camp. However, several of Everett’s top 16-year-olds are skipping rookie camp and advancing straight to the main training camp. That group includes goaltender Kent Simpson, forwards Markus McCrea, Tyler Parker and D.Jay McGrath, and defenseman Gabriel Minville.
Scrimmages take place at 9 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. each day, with practice sessions at 10:45 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Green vs. White game is set for 11 a.m. Sunday.
The main training camp, which features the veteran players, begins Sunday evening.
