Oh what a relief
Alex Leavitt was brought to Everett to provide a little offense.
So when Leavitt finally scored his first goal in a Silvertips uniform Sunday in Everett’s 4-4 tie with Calgary, it was accompanied by a strong sense of relief.
“I was definitely wanting to help the team and provide the offense I was brought here to provide, so finally being able to get my name on the scoring sheet was nice,” Leavitt said. “Hopefully that will just kick start some momentum and keep something of a scoring streak going.
Since arriving in Everett in a trade with Swift Current six games ago, Leavitt has shown exactly why the Silvertips targeted the talented 20-year-old forward, creating scores of opportunities for teammates with his visionary passes. The one thing he hadn’t done, however, is find the net himself.
“Our line’s had an amazing amount of chances the last three or four games and we just couldn’t buy a goal, missing empty nets, hitting posts and things like that,” Leavitt said. “So to finally get – not the prettiest goal ever – but just to get something to go in the net was nice to get the monkey off my back.”
Leavitt scored a power-play goal in the third period against Calgary, picking up the puck along the left boards, slipping through an opening in the defense and wristing a shot along the ice past Calgary goaltender Scott Bowles.
“I just kind of stopped thinking for once and kind of went to the net and shot,” Leavitt explained. “I didn’t think about where I was shooting it or about making a fancy play. I just got it and shot it. You’d be surprised how many times those ones go in compared to the ones you think about too much.”
Around the WHL: Despite going 1-0-1 with a win over top-ranked Medicine Hat, the Silvertips dropped one position to seventh in this week’s Western Major Junior Hockey Writers Association poll. Seattle took over the top spot, garnering seven of the 12 first-place votes. Saskatoon was second and Kootenay third. Medicine Hat, the unanimous No. 1 most of the season, dropped to fourth after going 0-4 last week. … Vancouver center Adam Courchaine was named both the WHL and the Canadian Hockey League Player of the Week for Nov. 22-28. Courchaine had four goals and three assists in two games as the Giants won both their games. … Vancouver traded Everett nemesis Ty Morris, a 20-year-old forward, along with a fourth-round pick in the 2005 Bantam Draft to Moose Jaw in exchange for 20-year-old defenseman Conlan Seder. Moose Jaw then traded Morris, 18-year-old forward Cam Lilley and a seventh-round pick in the 2005 Bantam Draft to Red Deer for 20-year-old defenseman Stuart Kerr, a sixth-round pick in the 2005 Bantam Draft and a seventh-round pick in the 2006 Bantam Draft.
